How To Pack Framed Artwork for Shipping

My blog posts do include Amazon affiliate links (Links are underlined and in italics).  If you are in need of anything I mention in my blog and click on the link and purchase the item, I may receive a small commission at no cost to you.  Of course, always use what you have available to you.

There are many ways to pack up an original painting to ship to your customers.  I have been shipping my artwork for four years now, and have not had a broken glass/frame or crushed canvas.  I want to tell you my findings over the years to ship your items safe and easily. Also how to use lightweight materials to keep your shipping costs at a minimum.

First I take glassine to wrap the framed artwork in.  I use the rolls of glassine and cut it down to the size I need.  You want a piece long enough to cover the item and be able to wrap it like a present.  If your piece is wider that your roll, you can use two or more pieces.

I use packing tape to tape each layer of the packing process.  You can use any strong tape.  I do not recommend masking tape or scotch tape. In my opinion it is not strong enough.

Then I take two pieces of cardboard cut to approximately an inch larger than the frame.  I use cardboard sheets but you can definitely recycle cardboard you have in your studio.  Put one sheet on the bottom and one sheet on the top of the artwork.

Then I take the stretch wrap and cover the cardboard horizontal and vertically.

Then I wrap bubble wrap horizontal and vertically like a present.  The package is now ready to go into the box.

I always include a handwritten thank you note.  Not printed.  Not mass produced.  Each note is specific to the customer and their order.  It means a lot to me and hopefully to them.

I like to use a new box for my frames and canvas artwork.  I want to make sure they are strong enough and do not have soft spots that could crush.  I definitely use recycled boxes for other items but not these type items. I like my box to be about two inches around larger than my piece.

I use crumpled paper for filler.  Sometimes I use recycled bubble wrap I get in shipments. I put it on the bottom of the box.  Put my wrapped artwork on top of that.  Then I put crumpled paper on top of artwork and around the sides.

I do not use peanuts in any of my shipping.  No special reason, I  personally am not a fan.
