Wild Cactus Acrylic Painting Tutorial Learn to paint cacti with this concise acrylic guide. This photo was taken by me at Caprock Canyon State Park. Materials Paints: Cadmium Yellow, Naples Yellow, Hooker's Green, Titanium White, Paynes Grey. Brushes: Angle (size 8-10), Round (size 6), Detail (size 2) Other: Canvas, palette knife, water, paper towels, palette Steps 1. Sketch & Composition Lightly sketch your cactus off-center. Using Cadmium red light for background and Hookers green deep to sketch out shapes 2. Background. Paint it in and then let layer dry. 3. Cactus Base. Use layers and let each layer dry in between. You want shades of green and yellow and use your shadow colors. Block in shapes with angle brush Vary tones: lighter (add white), darker (add Hooker's Green) 4. Light & Shadow 5. Texture 6. Final Details Step back and adjust values for dramatic contrast. Let completely dry and then varnish if you would like. Frame in corresponding size frame with no glass since it is acrylic.
